Everyone looks for the zoo first. I don’t any more. I pick the month, then the day inside that month, then how far from the gate I’m willing to sleep.

The month decides everything, and you can’t outsmart it

Zoos are seasonal animals, and so are the places around them. San Diego’s busiest stretch runs from mid-June through the third week of August, when school is out and the whole of Southern California seems to arrive at once; I paid 190 dollars for a room in North Park in late July, a room I’d booked for 78 dollars the previous November. Singapore is the opposite problem. Its zoo at Mandai is a year-round draw, so the crunch isn’t school holidays, it’s the June and December holiday peaks plus the F1 weekend in September, which swallows every hotel within a train stop of the centre.

What I actually check, in order:

The local school calendar, not my own. American summer, European summer and Chinese New Year move different crowds.

Whether a major event lands on my dates. A marathon, a festival, a Grand Prix.

The rainy season, because a washed-out zoo day is money gone.

How far the nearest station or bus stop is from the gate I’ll exit tired from.

That order matters because the first two items are the ones you can’t negotiate with. A wet afternoon you can plan around. A city booked solid for a long weekend, you cannot.

The days around the visit, not the day you pay

Something I got wrong for a long time: I thought the day I bought the ticket set the price. It doesn’t. What moves the number is demand on the dates you’re flying, and midweek departures are often cheaper because fewer people are travelling for leisure, but that’s about the flying day, never the buying day. For a short hop like Sydney to Melbourne, where I’ve watched fares swing between about 89 and 260 Australian dollars depending on the week, the bottom tends to sit a few weeks out; for anything long-haul tied to a zoo trip on the other side of the world, you’re looking months ahead, and the cheap rooms near the famous gates are usually the first to go.

I’ve had good luck using Kupi.com’s Sydney – Melbourne flight comparison to see how a date shift changes the fare, mostly because it lets me move the whole trip by a day and watch what happens. Shifting a Sydney departure from Friday to Wednesday once saved me enough to cover two nights in a hostel dorm near Royal Melbourne Zoo, and that’s the sort of trade I’ll take every time.

How far ahead, and what beats flying

Rooms near the big zoos work differently from flights. San Diego’s lodge-style stays inside the park itself book out around six to eight months ahead for summer, and the same is true of the safari tents at Singapore’s Mandai. If you want somewhere genuinely odd (a glass dome over a lion enclosure, a converted train carriage), you’re competing with people who plan a year out. For ordinary budget beds, two to three months is usually fine outside peak weeks.

The honest alternative: for short trips to a zoo in your own country, driving or the train often wins once you add baggage and the airport transfer, and I’d say so plainly. Flying only makes sense when the zoo is far enough that the ground option eats two days you don’t have.

I was sitting on the floor of a hostel in Lisbon last February, rain hammering the window, trying to work out why a dorm bed near San Diego Zoo for the third week of July cost three times what it did in November, and it took me an embarrassingly long time to realise I was […]

[43

post-19794","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news
["GET
